about

This song was born from reading a Tom Waits poem. Upon reading Mr. Waits' words, a melody jumped into my head and the song was born. The theme of my song is one of the ubiquity and omnipresence of loneliness in modern society. Once in the depths of a depression I was lifted up by the idea that I was not the only human on earth who was lonely and sad at that very moment. The idea is that feeling sad, feeling lonely, feeling depressed, is one of the most natural and human feelings in the world. If you feel lonely, it means you're part of the club;)

This song, like many on the record, was recorded live to tape synched to the MPC1000. The tape tracks feature lead vocals, and two acoustic guitars. MPC tracks cover the bass, percussion, synthesizers, background vocals, and samples.

This song has no traditional chorus and instead features a synth/piano instrumental break that is mimicked by the guitar on the second pass. Sometimes the song doesn't need a chorus.

lyrics

Way out there,
I heard somebody crying
Way out there,
I'm sure somebody's lonely
And I hope they know
It ain't just them only
Everybody's lonely
Way out there

And way up there,
I see billions of stars
@ay up there,
They all shine so bright
But way down here,
They're nothing but old light
yet my world's still dreamy
way down here tonight

And underground,
the worms may be digging
And underground,
The roots are all reaching
But underground,
Ain't nobody preaching
So why not keep dreamin' our lives away
