about

This is another song written for my girlfriend who lives so far away from me. I wrote this song after playing a New Year's Eve gig one year that she and I were unable to be in the same city for the holiday. I'm not a religious person, so to me New Years Eve has always been a more significant holiday than Christmas as it symbolizes new beginnings and optimism about the future. Auld Lang Syne is also one of my favorite melodies of all time and I relish the opportunity to incorporate this old tune into my song:)

Like other tunes on this album, the guitars and vocals were recorded live onto tape accompanied by bass and percussion on the MPC1000. After I returned from New Orleans, I had Kevin Stringfellow add a tasteful muted trumpet part. Kevin's horn part is the ONLY part on this record not recorded by me. It just felt right for this tune and so I gave him a call.

Notice the intro/outro of this song is my chord/melody arrangement (or at least a snippet) of "Auld Lang Syne." this arrangement/intro/outro was very heavily influenced by the guitar of the Mills Brothers and players like Bucky Pizzarelli.

lyrics

Well I'm dancing alone
At a happenin' place
To Auld Lang Syne
On the last evening of the year

With a drink in my hand
And a frown on my face
I swear I'd be smiling
I'd be smiling if you were here

But maybe this time next year
I won't be dancing alone
And maybe this time next year
I could be taking you home

Instead of dancing alone
And feeling lonely
To Auld Lang Syne
On the last evening of the year

But maybe this time next year
I won't be dancing alone
And maybe this time next year
I could be taking you home

Instead of dancing alone
As the clock strikes midnight
To Auld Lang Syne
To Auld Lang Syne
To Auld Lang Syne
On the Last evening of the year
