about

I wrote this song soon after hearing M. Ward's "The Girl From Conejo Valley." One of the main lessons I learned from listening to M. Ward records when I was coming into my musical maturity was an appreciation for Jazz chord progressions over Rock and Roll rhythms. Thematically it is an admission that I don't maintain relationships the way I should, and that I could do better at keeping in touch with those that I love. It's also an attempt at what I call the "Secular Hymn" of which the best example I can think of is Bill Withers' "Lean On Me." I wanted to write an uplifting song that encouraged interconnectedness, interdependency and community.

This song was also recorded onto the 424 (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar) and MPC1000 (drums, bass, synths, white noise, etc.). Please enjoy the "callback" vocals sung into an old Southwestern Bell telephone.

lyrics

Hey, I've got your number
And you've got mine
So why don't you call me?
Maybe I should call you sometime
I mean...
I mean, how busy could we actually be?

I saw you sitting all by yourself
Draining a bottle from the very top shelf
I mean...
I mean, hey buddy, hand that bottle to me
(And then tell me all about it)

Don't carry that weight all alone
Don't hesitate to pick up your phone
Please just reach right out and call me

'Cause you can call me for anything at all
Yeah you can call me for anything at all

I wrote you a letter
Oh I wrote you a song
I hoped that you'd help me by singing along
I need...
To be... understood, damn that's something to be
(You're telling me...)

Don't carry that weight all alone
Don't hesitate to pick up your phone
Please just reach right out and call me

'Cause you can call me for anything at all
Yeah you can call me for anything at all
Yeah you can call me for anything at all
Yeah you can call me for anything at all
Yeah you can call me for anything at all
Yeah you can call me for anything at all
You can call me for anything
You can call me for anything
You can call me for anything
You can call me for anything
Anything at all
