about

This song is a character song about a disillusioned country singer grappling with the conflict between his disgust for the music business and his love for music itself. It explores the more cynical or jaded sides of my own personality, though no matter how jaded I get, a song will still reduce me to tears. What does that mean? Who knows and who cares.

This song, like many on this record, features live vocals, Willie-Style guitar, and pedal steel guitar performed by myself and tracked onto the 424, accompanied by rhythm parts and samples programmed on my MPC1000. the MPC was synched to the 424 with a Tascam MTS-30. Once the live performances were locked in, I would refine the samples, bass lines, and rhythm parts to my liking. take notice of the bag-of-coins sample on this track:)

lyrics

I'm only sober when I'm dreaming
I'm only stoned when I'm awake
And lately this job's got me feeling
Like my whole life is a mistake
I love the feeling when I'm leaving
But I can't seem to stay away
I'm only happy when I'm bleeding
That's why I choose to live this way

And I'm only in it for the money
I lost my passion long ago
And a few may find this funny
but I'm out here fighting for my soul
I pray this love I've found sustains me
Until I have to let it go
But I'm only in it for the money
And I just thought you all should know

Oh how I've cried
And how I've weeped and sighed
All for a song
Just for a song

*Bar talk*

Oh how I've cried
And how I've weeped and sighed
All for a song
Just for a song

That's why I live or die by pen-strokes,
Rhythm and chords and melody
And it may seem strange to some folks
But these simple songs have set me free

I pray this love I've found sustains me
But somedays I just don't know
Oh and this love I've found might kill me
But I can't seem to let it go,
Oh no no no...
This love I've found will kill me
And I don't wanna let it go
